The story described in 2 Kings 6:8-23 presents an interesting view at the beginning of the new year.

As the permanent threat for the people of Israel, Syrians found another reason to attack them at this time to capture a single man: Elisha. The accusation? The prophet of the Lord had the capacity of “spying” for the king of Israel, revealing their tactics and strategies.

Metaphorically, Syrians can be considered a symbol of our spiritual enemies. Satan is furious because we are aware of his tactics and temptations. The Holy Spirit, through the Bible, warns us about the dangers we may face now or in the future.

Also, as we see from Gehazi’s reaction, fear can be the natural product of using only our physical capacities to assess the reality of our present or future context.

Ultimately, the spiritual perspective does not eliminate the negative reality but offers a better alternative. Even if the Syrians surrounded the prophet and his servant, Elisha was able to see the “horses and chariots of fire” surrounding all the enemy’s military equipment. The heavenly army was more numerous and powerful.

I wish you a blessed 2022 with no fear or anxiety. Do not be afraid of anything because “those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” I encourage you to experience God’s presence, and He will take care of your “enemies.”

Also, try to be an “Elisha” to a “Gehazi” in your family or context. Bring a perspective of hope and God’s vision to those afraid and disturbed by current and future events.

Happy and Blessed New Year to you and your beloved ones!

Titus Naftanaila, President
