This past January 23–25, men from across the Wisconsin Conference braved bone-chilling temperatures to gather at Camp Wakonda for our annual Men’s Retreat.
With windchills plunging to -35°F, the weather tested our resolve—but it couldn’t dim the warmth we found inside the cozy camp lodges. Despite the arctic blast outside, a dedicated group showed up, ready to connect, reflect, and grow together.
The weekend’s theme centered on men’s mental health and its vital connection to spiritual well-being. In honest conversations, powerful messages, and moments of shared vulnerability, participants explored how faith can be a steady anchor amid life’s emotional storms. We discussed practical ways to care for our minds, lean on one another, and draw strength from God’s presence—reminders that true strength often looks like asking for help and resting in grace.
Beyond the deep discussions, the retreat offered plenty of laughter, good food, fireside fellowship, and the simple joy of being in brotherhood with other men who share the journey. Whether hiking (briefly!) in the crisp air, playing games, or just sitting quietly in reflection, every moment reinforced the value of showing up—for ourselves, for each other, and for Christ.
Throughout the weekend, four inspiring voices shared deeply personal stories and practical wisdom, tying men’s mental health directly to a vibrant walk with Christ.
Brian Sachse from Wausau opened up courageously about his own battles with anxiety and intrusive thoughts. Far from stopping at the struggle, he equipped us with real, battle-tested tools to challenge and reframe negative thought patterns—reminders that victory often comes when we intentionally give our battles to the Lord.
We were saddened that Verne FitzGerald from Green Bay couldn’t join us in person due to an unexpected injury, but praise God for modern technology! He recorded his message ahead of time, allowing his words to still reach and bless every man in the room. Drawing from his years as a psychiatric nurse working with young people, Verne shared heartfelt insights into mental health challenges alongside the steady faithfulness of his lifelong journey with Christ.
Carter Frantz from Lexington, Kentucky, joined us virtually from an undisclosed location in the mission field. He spoke movingly about discerning and following Jesus’ leading—even when it takes us far from comfort zones—and challenged us to pay close attention to where we sense Christ’s presence most powerfully in our own lives.
Finally, Tim Crawczyk from Milwaukee closed with warmth and authenticity, reflecting on his family life, his marriage, and the ongoing adventure of following Jesus wherever He calls to serve and live daily. His message grounded the weekend in the truth that our mental and emotional health flourishes when rooted in surrendered, purpose-driven relationships—with God and with those we love.
These presentations weren’t just talks; they were invitations to honesty, hope, and deeper dependence on Christ. Each speaker reminded us that we’re not alone in our struggles—and that God meets us right there with grace, community, and practical next steps.
A huge thank you to everyone who attended, to our speakers and facilitators who led with courage and compassion, and to the Camp Wakonda staff for creating such a welcoming space even in the depths of winter.
If you missed this year’s retreat, mark your calendar now: next year’s will take place January 22-24. These weekends are life-giving and always worth the drive (and the layers!). We’ll see you next time, God willing—hopefully with slightly milder weather.
