Camp Lamp: Neighborly Conversation Leads to Baptism and Marriage

Scott Van Camp and Kateri Scott were neighbors to Wyatt and Roberta Pratt, members of the Rice Lake Seventh-day Adventist Church. Kateri started asking Roberta questions about her faith during COVID-19, and soon started attending church with her, but her fiancé, Scott, wasn’t interested.

On Pastor Scott Manly’s first Sabbath at Rice Lake in April of 2021, he walked up to a conversation Kateri was having with the head elder, Mark Graham, about her desire to be baptized. Kateri was struggling because her fiancé wasn’t interested. Pastor Manly suggested she invite her fiancé, Scott, to join the church volleyball night that evening in their gym. He could hang out with church members in a less threatening way. She decided to invite him, and Scott agreed to come. Soon, he started attending church, and within a couple weeks, they even attended the Wisconsin camp meeting.

Throughout the year, Pastor Manly, and other church members studied the Bible with Scott, while Kateri studied with some ladies in the church. God was transforming their hearts by His abundant grace, and, on January 22, 2022, Scott and Kateri were baptized. Then, the two of them were married on March 20, 2022, in the Rice Lake Church by Pastor Manly. Scott shared that the volleyball night was just what he needed to see that Christians are normal people, who can carry on conversations without always talking about Jesus in every sentence.

How we wish Roberta could see this fruit of her witness! Sadly, Roberta passed away in August of 2021, but we look forward to the day she will see both Scott and Kateri in the resurrection. What a joy that will be!
