¡Sanas y Felices!

Healthy and Happy!

Albert Einstein once said, “The mind is like a parachute: it only works if it opens.” Attending the ladies’ 2019 retreat at Andrews University as a presenter of Health and Temperance was an adventure and challenge, but at the same time it turned out to be a great blessing and learning for me, and my friend Evelyn Acosta.

This weekend Pastor Arnaldo Cruz reminded us of the importance of believing in who we are: daughters of God, and that we must live at that height. We are unique and we should not compare ourselves with anyone, we must believe it and above all keep it. Without knowing it, it was already Sunday and the weekend was over and it was time to go home. It happens that back home, Evelyn joyfully calls her husband and says, “I am healthy and happy!” That happiness lasted only a few minutes.

They did not finish spending 10 minutes when she receives a call from a relative letting her know that something had happened with her son, and she was in great danger. Upon hearing this news, Evelyn enters into a crisis, since she could not do anything for her son. I am driving, and she informs me that she is going to call her husband again to inform him that he would not arrive healthy and happy, and so he could prepare to receive a wife in crisis and desperate. When she told me this, I immediately interrupted and told her that she should not do this since our humor and peace does not depend on our circumstances and behavior of another person or any information we receive.\

We have control over our emotions, and I asked her to allow me to pray before making the call. With one hand outstretched and the other on the wheel, pray the prayer of King Jehoshaphat, when the sons of Moab and Ammon came against him (2 Chronicles 20). “Our God and great Father, a disturbing news has arrived of a child in danger. Here her mother impotent and in great anguish. We do not know what to do and for this reason we turn our faces to You, asking you to please save this son who is in great danger. Bring this mother your calm and control so that she can listen to the instructions of your Spirit and know what to do in this acute trance. Please do not let this dangerous situation steal the health and happiness that You have just given us. We want to return as You said: healthy and happy. We know that our happiness and health does not depend on what happens to us, but depends on Your presence in our hearts. We can have peace in the storm; we can have faith and hope when we cannot continue. Even with our world shattered, we know that You will guide our steps.

For a long time the enemy has sold us the idea that when a child is in danger, the mother faints and enters into a crisis; and we sadly buy him this thought and let him control us. But Father, at this moment we return this merchandise of impotence and incapacity. By faith in Jesus, we accept your powerful grace to save and restore. Do not let the enemy steal our mental health, in your name Lord save this son in great danger, and return control and peace to my friend. Pray also that God will help me to control my own emotions and humor and to be able to continue driving safely.

At that time after praying, while driving I searched for my music collection entitled Praises in the Midst of Pain and we began to worship as well as King Jehoshaphat. By the power of God our prayer was answered. When my friend called her husband again, she was able to inform her husband about what had happened but with more calmness instead of telling her that she was no longer “healthy and happy”. Not long after, she received a text informing her that her son was already in a safe place.

The Lord also showed us this weekend, that the enemy is like a roaring lion to take happiness out of our hearts in Jesus, but the Lord has shown us that we can live healthy and happy by his power.

When I got home and my husband and son asked me how I was doing, I was able to answer him with the same enthusiasm with which I came out of the ladies’ retreat- “Happy and Healthier” and added, in victory.
