Editor’s Note: Two Evils, One Focus

During our recent pandemic, I have found real delight in life slowing down a bit. I’ve gone on more walks and thoroughly enjoyed each day of the unfolding of this spring. Using my extra time, I’m taking an on-line discipleship course through Arise which has been wonderful.

One of the Bible lessons shared a verse in Jeremiah that seems to sum up in two points the whole reason people fail in their walk with Jesus, and inversely the simple secret of living victoriously in Jesus.

Two evils my people have done:
they have forsaken me, the source of living waters;
They have dug themselves cisterns,
Broken cisterns that cannot hold water. Jeremiah 2:13

1. We neglect drinking from the fountain of living water.
2. We start drinking from broken cisterns

What does it mean to forsake drinking from the fountain of living water? I think we all understand this is the neglect time with Jesus through Bible study, prayer, meditation and sharing with others.

What does it mean to drink from broken cisterns? I believe it means we turn to things that are empty, shallow, or provide short-term immediate satisfaction to provide us our feelings of worth, value, and love.

I’m thankful for this pandemic time to slow down and focus on the one thing necessary for salvation, freedom and joy: a relationship with Jesus. Let’s drink deeply from this beautiful fountain of life-giving water every day.
