The Sounds of Camp Meeting
As I walked around camp this week, I heard many voices.
Some were singing praises:
“Make me a fisher of men, keep me seeking. Make me a fisher of men I pray…” , “J-E-S-U-S, YES! He’s the king of me! He’s the king of the universe…”, “And I will run to You. To your words of truth… Yes, I will run the race, till I see Your face…”
Some were voices of Nature:
Birds singing… Rain falling on the metal roofs… Thunder crashing… wind in the trees.
Others were voices of greeting:
“It’s been so long! How have you been?” “Good morning… How are you?…” “ Have a great day!” “Good to see you too!”
Some were helpful or encouraging:
“Where do I go to find… Here, let me show you.”, “Thank you for…” “I really appreciated…”, “You’ll really like/you should really come hear…” Hammers and saws were being used to finish the siding for the new medical building or other projects around camp.
Some were telling of the goodness of God:
“It was a God thing. Only He could orchestrate that!”, “God has been good”, “God is making all things new!”, “We needed this rain!”
Other voices told of pain:
A baby or young child crying. Someone struggling with the direction life has taken…“How do I go on like this?” “Where is God in this?” “What am I supposed to do now?”
There were excited children running through bubbles and puddles or blowing their Gideon trumpets. There were small groups of people pausing for prayer together. There were hugs with joy of seeing one another again; there were hugs of compassion sharing the burden of another’s soul.
All these voices speak of God’s presence with us. We acknowledge Him with songs of praise and words of prayer. We experience His presence through nature. We share Him with words or actions of help, encouragement or compassion.
I pray you heard His voice this year at camp meeting. We look forward to seeing you next year!
