On Sunday, April 29, the Wisconsin Conference Adventurer Fun Day took place at The Shepherd’s House church gymnasium in Wausau, Wisconsin. Five clubs were in attendance from all across the state (Clear Lake, Green Bay, Milwaukee, Waukesha, and Wausau), and including club leaders and parents, there were about ninety in attendance. Ally Payne, our Wisconsin Conference Adventurers Coordinator, started the meeting shortly after 10:00am with the Adventurer Pledge and Law followed by some songs. Pastor Zack Payne gave an opening devotional thought.
Glen Morrow, our Wisconsin Conference Pathfinder Coordinator, came to lead out in morning activities, which focused around the Tin Can Fun award. Adventurers learned about the history of tin cans, made tin can telephones and stilts, and even won a tin can marionette. Adults were also blindfolded and fed various canned foods that they had to guess by taste–much to the delight of the Adventurers.
Lunch was provided by Pamela Krueger and a team of volunteers from The Shepherd’s House church, and included vegan and gluten free options. The Wisconsin Conference Youth Department is especially grateful to Pamela and the team, knowing that they were also hosting an Education Sabbath in the sanctuary during church time.
Pastor Justin Spady shared that a lot of the leaders at The Shepherd’s House are, or have been, very involved in youth ministry and were happy to see an event like Adventurer Fun Day come to their church. Even hosting two youth events at once was not a burden to them, but a pleasure.
After lunch, Pastor Zack and Ally taught the Feathered Friends award. Adventurers learned about how Jesus said we should observe birds and learn not to worry. They learned to recognize different types of birds and their songs, made bird feeders out of (you guessed it) tin cans, and even got to play with some baby chicks. Finally, after a round of bird charades, Adventurers were dismissed a little before 4:00pm, and got to take home snack bags for the drive home.
Many stayed to help clean up the gym before heading out. Looking back, it was truly a fun day for Adventurers and adults alike.
The next big Wisconsin Conference Adventurers event will be the Adventurers Camping Weekend, September 8-10 at Camp Wakonda. We hope to see all our Adventurer Clubs there!
