“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going.” (Ecclesiastes 9:9, 10 NKJV)
“The Most Dangerous Activity at Summer Camp”……. I have to admit, the title had me. I could hardly wait to read the contents of this most prevalent article. I was expecting horses, swimming, skiing, climbing wall and all sorts of other higher risk activities. I was shocked when the next line simply read…“free time”.
Oddly enough it didn’t take much to convince me as I have seen this in the past. When people are given a lot of time with little or nothing to do, they find ways to fill it. If you put 10 guys in a cabin for an hour period, they will find whatever objects are in the cabin and create some sort of game in which someone will probably get hurt. I know….. because I was one of these guys.
I wonder if this applies to us in our churches today? When we are not active in soul winning ministry, we slowly begin to focus on things like the mismatched socks that the elder wore on Sabbath, or the fact that dear sister Smith did special music two weeks in a row. We begin to find things to grumble about such as how the bulletin had two typos this Sabbath instead of the allotted one. When we have too much time with a lack of focus and vision, the simplest of things can be used not only to frustrate us, but to divide us.
I am of the opinion that we were created to serve and not to simply be entertained. For years we tried to “entertain” our youth with ministry. We found that we were no match for Hollywood and the only answer was to simply get them involved in active ministry. This generation is not built to be entertained. Let us therefore use the gifts God has given us to further the gospel. When we partner with God and with one another, it is amazing how the little things……. Remain little things!
